The Golden State has a lot to offer nurses besides its sandy beaches and abundance of sunshine. More and more people are going into the nursing field these days, but what’s the actual process for getting your RN license in the state of California?
Make obtaining your California nursing license hassle-free with these steps to guide and assist you each step of the way!
First of all, Apply online or obtain an application packet and detailed instructions from the BRN website. To qualify for licensure by endorsement, you must hold a current and active RN license in another state, U.S. territory, or Canada, have completed an educational program meeting all CA requirements, and passed the NCLEX-RN. Find out more information on this process here.
Be prepared. Send your application to the BRN at least 6-8 weeks before graduation. In addition, have your school send your transcripts to the BRN. Remember to send in your application early, or else you may end up waiting for your approval for much longer!
Put your best fingers forward. Complete a fingerprint background check.
Nail the NCLEX. Take and pass the National Council Licensing Examination, or NCLEX. The exam itself is computerized and given continuously 6 days a week. Tip for new graduates! Take the test sooner rather than later, research has shown that there’s a higher success rate for early test takers compared with those who wait several months. Need help studying? Check out this website on how to navigate the NCLEX!
Apply for an Interim Permit. If you want to work in a supervised nursing capacity while awaiting the results of your test, applying for this permit is essential.
